SENSOR - Connection Issues: Open door warning stuck, not connecting & troubleshooting tips

7 min. readlast update: 10.17.2023

The Door/WIndow Open warning will not go off even with the door or window closed:

The door open or window open warning light will go off once you shut the window or door. If you have checked that all doors or windows are closed and the warning light is still showing, please press the disarm button to clear it. If you have armed the system while the door open/window open warning you will get a notification to your phone with an Open Door/Window Warning. Please do not ignore this warning! failure to ignore this warning will disable the alarm trigger and the siren will not go off if an intruder breaks in.

Always make sure the doors and windows are closed and ensure that the Door Open/Window Open warning is no longer showing on the display before arming the system.

If you are having issues with the Door Open /Window Open warning light not turning off when you close the door it is most likely due to these 4 reasons:

  1. Contact Sensor Synced Incorrectly: When you Synced the Contact Sensor, you did it incorrectly. This is usually the main reason why you will get the Door/Window Open Warning that will not go away. Please check out step by step instructions on how to properly sync (connect) the contact sensor to the OSI Alarm display here
  2. OSI Alarm Panel is too far away from the sensor: Try moving the panel to a more central location. This will enable the signal from the Display to reach all the sensors on your property
  3. Improper installation of the sensor: The sensor should always be side by side with each other, flat and level. This goes for both the window and door. see example belows. Also ensure that the sensors are 1/4 inch apart or less and the arrows on each side of the sensor are perfectly aligned. See below topics "Door Sensors not working due to uneven door frame" and "Proper window sensor installation. Sensor on window not working"
  4. Too many walls, barriers or electrical disturbance: Too many walls especially concrete walls can cause the signal to weaken, this also goes for microwaves or any other electirical device that gives off strong high frequency electrical signals. If your sensors or magnets are mounted on a door or a window (or door/window frame) that is metallic (steel or aluminum), this can interfere with the magnetic field of the magnet.

There are three posssible ways to fix this issue. #1 Move the Alarm Display to a central location so the signal from the display can reach all the sensors. #2 Use a RF Repeater. A signal booster (RF repeater) can fix this problem as it will boost the radio frequency from the sensor to the OSI Alarm Panel. This can even enable the sensor to work in a detatched garage or shed (prefferably insulated max -10°C ) . #3 If your window or door frame is metal, Mounting the sensors with a spacer that is not conductive (plastic or thick foam) May help the sensors to work more reliably, so that they are situated away from any metal when they are mounted.

Contact Sensor "Learning Failure" Message

Your window/door sensor is having errors when trying to connect to the OSI Wireless alarm System. The two popular errors are:

Error#1 "Learning Failure": it is most likely due to not triggering the sensor in order for it to connect the sensor during pairing mode (during count down). For the motion sensor you only need to wave your had accross the motion sensor. For the contact sensor, just press the little black protruding button the back. If the contact sensor is already installed you just need to make sure the window or door is in the closed position, then once the OSI alarm display is in pairing mode and the count down has started, open the door or window.

Error#2 "Device Code has been Learnt": This will typically happen when you are trying to connect your contact sensor (window/door sensor). This is most likely happening because it is receiving a signal from your motion sensor. Turn off ALL Motion Sensors when connecting your contact sensors or any additional motion sensors. Don't forget to turn back on the Motion Sensors after you have connected your Contact Sensor.

Door Sensors not working due to uneven door frame

Your sensors are working before installing them on the door frame, but, once you install them on the door it no longer works. This is most likely due to the uneven door frame causing the sensors to not align perfectly. In order to fix this issue we recommend either buying thick double sided tape (see figure 1) or corrugated plastic (see figure 2) as you see below. Then cut and apply onto door and frame until the two sides of the sensors align perfectly flat as you see in figure 3. Again, please make sure the sensor is less than 1/4 inch apart and the arrows on each side of the sensor is aligned.

Proper Contact Sensor installation. Sensor on window or door not not working

If the sensor is not working on the window where it is not being triggered or showing the Window Open warning is stuck when the window is open or closed, it could very easily be the way it is installed. Please make sure the sensor is less than 1/4 inch apart and the arrows on each side of the sensor is aligned.

Note: If the methods below still do not work you may need to purchase a signal repeater due to certain barriers, electrical disturbance around the area. This will most likely fix the issue. We will be releasing the OSI ALARM SIGNAL REPEATER by Sept 2022 for an affordable price.

Below are 2 ways you can install the contact sensors on both the window & door, Flat or Rotated.

Rotated: Window Installation (below)

INCORRECT WAY: This image below shows the Magnet too far away from the sensor side. please make sure both sides are closer as the magnet needs to be strong enough to activate the sensor.

Door/Window Open Warning not showing, alarm not triggering or Doorbell mode not working

We recommend Deleting all the sensors off the alarm panel and then re-adding them from the Smart Life App. Please follow the steps below on how to add the sensors using Smart Life App. See How to ADD sensors using Smart Life App here

Note: When adding sensors, we recommend adding the door/window sensors first. Also, please turn off all motion sensors (the on/off switch is at the back of the motion). When adding more motion sensors you will need to turn off any added motion sensors as well. Remember to turn them all ON once you have completed adding all sensors.

*Lastly, please ensure that door sensors are together or door/window is in the closer position BEFORE selecting the "+" to start the counter. If both sides of the sensor are apart before you add the sensor, this will cause an issue with a open door warning appearing stuck and not working.
