The OSI Smart Alarm System Gen 2 is designed to remain plugged into AC power continuously, while the built-in backup battery automatically remains charged and ready during a real power outage.
Some customers may unplug the panel during the day to allow it to run on battery power and then reconnect the power adapter at night to recharge it. While this may seem harmless, regularly doing this is not recommended and can reduce the lifespan and reliability of the system.
Why Continuous Plugged-In Operation Is Recommended
The Gen 2 panel uses its internal battery as an emergency backup power source, not as a daily-use battery system.
Repeatedly switching between AC power and battery power every day can place unnecessary stress on:
- The backup battery
- The charging circuit
- Communication modules
- Power connectors
Over time, this may affect overall system reliability.
Potential Issues Caused by Daily Unplugging
1. Reduced Backup Battery Lifespan
The Gen 2 backup battery is intended for:
- Power outages
- Emergency backup situations
- Occasional testing
It is not designed for daily discharge and recharge cycles.
Frequent cycling may cause:
- Reduced battery capacity
- Shorter battery lifespan
- Poor backup runtime during real outages
Eventually, the battery may no longer hold sufficient charge when needed most.
2. Increased Stress on the Charging Circuit
When the panel is reconnected to AC power, the internal charging system begins recharging the battery.
Daily recharge cycles can:
- Increase heat generation
- Cause additional wear on charging components
- Reduce long-term reliability
The charging system is designed to maintain the battery, not repeatedly recharge it from daily use.
3. Possible Communication Interruptions
Each time the system switches between AC and battery power:
- Wi-Fi connections may reconnect
- Cellular modules may reinitialize
- Network communication may briefly interrupt
This can occasionally result in:
- Delayed notifications
- Temporary offline status
- Delayed communication with the Central Monitoring Station (CMS)
4. Increased Wear on the Power Connector
Repeated plugging and unplugging of the power adapter may eventually:
- Loosen the DC connector
- Create intermittent power issues
- Cause unreliable charging connections
5. Reduced Overall System Reliability
Alarm systems are designed for continuous operation.
Frequent power cycling may increase the chance of:
- System instability
- Unexpected reboot behavior
- Battery-related trouble conditions
Recommended Best Practice
For optimal performance and long-term reliability:
✔ Keep the Gen 2 panel plugged into AC power continuously
✔ Allow the system to maintain the backup battery automatically
✔ Use the battery only during actual power outages or occasional testing
Recommended Battery Testing
Instead of daily unplugging, we recommend:
- Performing a brief battery test occasionally (for example every few months)
- Monitoring for low battery notifications
- Replacing the backup battery as recommended when capacity decreases
Important
The backup battery is intended as an emergency power source to keep the system operational during a power outage. Preserving battery health helps ensure the alarm system remains functional when protection is needed most.
