Recommended 2.4Ghz smart device installation distance from Wi-Fi router

The recommended maximum distance between a 2.4 GHz smart device and a router for optimal functioning without disconnections can vary depending on several factors, including the specific devices, their antennas, the environment, and potential interference sources. However, as a general guideline, it is typically recommended to keep the distance between the device and the router within 30 to 45 feet (9 to 14 meters) in an open space environment.

Keep in mind that obstacles such as walls, floors, and other electronic devices can weaken the Wi-Fi signal, so the actual distance may be shorter if there are obstructions present. Additionally, factors like signal strength, the quality of the router, and the capabilities of the smart device's Wi-Fi receiver can also influence the range.

If you experience connectivity issues with your smart device, you can try the following steps to improve the signal strength:

  1. Reposition the router: Place the router in a central location, preferably elevated and away from obstructions. Avoid placing it near large objects or dense walls that may obstruct the signal.
  2. Reduce interference: Keep the router away from other electronic devices that may interfere with the Wi-Fi signal, such as cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors, or Bluetooth devices.
  3. Wi-Fi extender or repeater: If the signal is weak in certain areas, you can consider using a Wi-Fi extender or repeater to boost the signal and expand the coverage range. You internet provider may have this available free of charge.
  4. Upgrade your router: If your router is older or doesn't provide sufficient coverage, upgrading to a more powerful router with better range and signal strength may help improve the connectivity.
