How to Turn a Light On When Arming and Off When Disarming the Alarm System

4 min. readlast update: 11.02.2025

Overview

This article explains how to create a simple Smart Scene that turns on a light when your alarm system is armed and turns it off when disarmed. This setup is particularly useful for customers who use our external keypad (often installed at a back or side door) and want a visual indicator of the system’s status.

Because the external keypad does not have audio notifications, customers with larger homes may not hear the main alarm panel announce “System Armed” or “System Disarmed.” By linking the alarm system to a Smart Plug and a light, you can easily tell whether your system is armed or disarmed just by looking at the light.

  • OSI Gen 2 Smart Wi-Fi Alarm System

  • Smart Life app (installed and configured with your alarm system)

  • Smart Plug (connected to the same Smart Life account)

  • Optional: a lamp or small light plugged into the Smart Plug

Step 1: Create Smart Scene 1 – Turn On When Armed

  1. Open the Smart Life app.
  2. Tap Scene at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select the + sign at the top right corner and then select 'Create Scene'
  4. Then select 'When device status changes', then select 'Select a single device'
  5. Then select the Gen 2 Alarm Panel.
  6. Then select 'Mode', then select 'Away' under Mode. Then select 'Confirm'
  7. Where it says 'If', select the + sign beside it.
  8. Then select 'When device status changes', then select 'Select a single device'
  9. Then select the Gen 2 Alarm Panel.
  10. Then select 'Mode', then select 'Home' under Mode. Then select 'Confirm'
  11. Where it says, 'Then', beside it select the + sign
  12. Then select 'device', then select 'Select a single device'
  13. Then select the 'Smart Plug'
(note that you should have already added the smart plug to the Smart Life app)
  14. Then select 'Switch 1',  then select 'On', then select 'confirm'
  15. Save the scene and name it, for example: “Light On When Armed.”

Step 2: Create Smart Scene 2 – Turn Off When Disarmed

  6. Then select 'Mode', then select 'Disarm' under Mode. Then select 'Confirm'
  7. Where it says, 'Then', beside it select the + sign
  8. Then select 'device', then select 'Select a single device'
  9. Then select the 'Smart Plug'
(note that you should have already added the smart plug to the Smart Life app)
  10. Then select 'Switch 1',  then select 'Off', then select 'confirm'
  11. Save the scene and name it, for example: “Light Off When Disrmed.”

Step 3: Test Your Setup

After both scenes are created, arm and disarm your alarm system to verify that the light responds as expected:

  • When armed, the light should turn on.

  • When disarmed, the light should turn off.

You can adjust the timing or add additional automation (such as delays or push notifications) through the Smart Life app if desired.

Additional Notes

  • The Smart Plug can control any compatible device such as a lamp or indicator light.

  • You can also use a Smart Bulb instead of a plug for a similar effect.

  • Make sure your alarm panel and smart devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
