Gen 2 Alarm Panel — Connectivity Options and Monitoring Overview
The Gen 2 Wi-Fi/4G Alarm Panel is designed to operate in several different configurations depending on how you want to use and monitor your system. This article explains how the panel connects, how Wi-Fi and cellular communication work, and what options are available.
Internet Connection Requirements
The Gen 2 system uses Wi-Fi to connect to the internet and does not require a wired (plug-in) internet connection such as Ethernet.
You can connect the panel to your home or business Wi-Fi network to access remote control and notifications through the mobile app.
System Operating Modes
The Gen 2 alarm system can operate in several ways depending on how it is configured.
1. Standalone Mode
The system can operate as a local standalone alarm panel.
-
No Wi-Fi connection required
-
No SIM card required
-
The system will still trigger the siren if sensors are activated
This mode provides local security only without remote notifications.
2. Wi-Fi Mode (Smart Life App)
When connected to Wi-Fi, the system can be controlled through the Smart Life mobile app.
Features include:
-
Remote arm/disarm
-
Real-time notifications
-
System status monitoring
-
Remote management of sensors and settings
This is the most common configuration for self-monitored users.
3. SIM Card for Self-Monitoring
The Gen 2 panel also supports self-monitoring using a SIM card.
In this configuration:
-
You purchase a SIM card and talk/text plan from a recommended cellular provider.
-
The system sends SMS alerts or calls when an alarm event occurs.
This provides notification even if Wi-Fi is unavailable.
4. SIM Card for Professional Monitoring
For professional monitoring, the system communicates with our Central Monitoring Station (CMS) using a SIM card that we provide.
Important notes:
-
Cellular communication is the primary and only path used for monitoring signals.
-
The system does not use dual-path monitoring (Wi-Fi + cellular) for alarm reporting.
-
This design is intentional because cellular communication is more reliable than Wi-Fi for alarm signaling.
With professional monitoring enabled:
-
The provided SIM card is the sole communication path to the monitoring station.
-
Alarm signals are transmitted directly through the cellular LTE network.
Wi-Fi + SIM Card Combination
The system can also operate using Wi-Fi and a SIM card together when the SIM card is used for:
In these cases:
-
Wi-Fi may still be used for app control and notifications
-
Cellular is used for alarm communication when applicable
Cellular Network Compatibility (Canada)
There are no immediate concerns regarding cellular support.
In Canada:
-
4G/LTE is not being phased out
-
5G and LTE will remain the core cellular networks for the foreseeable future
-
What is being discontinued is 2G and particularly 3G networks
The Gen 2 system uses 4G/LTE, which remains fully supported.
Cellular Signal and Coverage
The monitoring SIM operates on major Canadian LTE networks, which generally provide strong coverage across Canada and most urban or suburban areas, including apartments and condo buildings.
However, signal strength can vary depending on:
-
Building construction materials
-
Building height
-
Installation location inside the property
Testing Cellular Signal
If you purchase the system with professional monitoring:
-
Install the provided SIM card.
-
Allow time for activation.
-
Check the cellular signal bars on the panel.
If the signal bars do not turn white, it may indicate that a reliable cellular signal is not available.
Activation can sometimes take longer depending on network registration.
Remember to submit a test request form to test you alarm panel with the CMS (Central Monitoring Station)
30-Day Return Policy
If cellular reception is not sufficient:
-
The system may be returned within 30 days.
-
We recommend keeping the system in its original condition to avoid any potential restocking charges.
SIM Card Installation and Pre-Testing
If the Gen 2 system is ordered through our Winnipeg, Manitoba office, you may request:
-
SIM card installation
-
SIM card signal testing prior to shipment to ensure that cellualar communication has been established with the CMS (Central Monitoring Station)
This helps ensure the system is ready for activation upon arrival. Please note that you will still need to submit a test request form to test you alarm panel with the CMS (Central Monitoring Station) to ensure your sensors signal are being received by the CMS when a sensor has been triggered.
