External Keypad Lights Up Quite Often

If you notice your external keypad lights up quite often please read the following:

In this image, the red square is the proximity sensor:

Based on the behavior, and the proximity sensor is being triggered more often than it should, which keeps the keypad waking up repeatedly. Since the keypad normally stays in a low-power sleep mode, frequent wake-ups can reduce the battery life from the expected 180 days down to just a few days.

What can cause this?

  • The proximity sensor may be overly sensitive or faulty
  • Movement or airflow from vents, pets, curtains, or reflections may be triggering it
  • The mounting angle or location may be causing the sensor to “see” movement farther away than expected

What you can try:

  1. Ensure the keypad is not facing direct sunlight, vents, or moving objects
  2. Try changing the angle or position slightly
  3. Make sure the keypad is running the latest firmware (if applicable)

Simple test to confirm the cause:
You can temporarily cover the proximity sensor (the small oval area on the lower right) with painter’s tape. Painter’s tape is gentle, doesn’t leave residue, and will block the sensor enough for testing.

Once the sensor is covered:

  • The keypad should stop lighting up unless a button is pressed
  • The battery should hold its charge normally

If the lighting issue stops with the sensor covered, we can confirm the sensor was being triggered constantly. If it continues lighting up even with the tape on, the sensor is likely faulty, and we can look at replacing the keypad.

Please let me know the results.
