Can you turn off the motion detector and still arm the rest if the system if someone is home and in the house?

Yes, when the motion sensor is programmed to "out arm active", you can arm the system in "stay" mode while at home and the motion sensor will not trigger the alarm. However if you arm the system in "Away" mode, the motion sensor would be active and will trigger the alarm if someone enters the area.
